thursday

elise interviewing dynah

thursday started a bit rocky, as julie and i called a cab, and the cab company said it'd be 30-60 minutes, and then the cab pulled up less than five minutes later, and we were far from ready. oops! we ran out the door, and as we were pulling up to the place where the diesel party was supposed to be we realized two things: one, julie had forgotten her badge at brent's, and two, that the diesel party time had been changed since the original flyer i'd made my party spreadsheet off of, so it was in the evening now instead of the afternoon. doh. so we called our new favorite cabbie robert, back - went home, grabbed the badge, and zoomed off to the filter party instead. i got a call from Rion from Dynah on the way, and told them where we were headed, and they met us there. i love getting to meet the bands in person that i've only known via email before. i did an interview with Rion and Phil, and we hung out and had a beer while Rion entertained us with stories that began "in ancient Mesopotamia..." and the like.

We finally tore ourselves away to head outside, where saw the cribs, metric, and elefant play on the outside stage, with maybe 50-70 other people. my friend eric from say hi to your mom was there, it was fun to see him. the metric show was *fantastic*. i mean, they were ON. we were right in front, and emily was leaning over the stage to sing right into julie's camera, and she got some really amazing photos. i got a little interview with emily, and then a station id from the elefant guy that julie was a bit crushed out on. i ran into mike from amusement parks on fire, who i'd met the week before when they played with silversun pickups and nine black alps in san francisco (and got a great interview with) - they'd just arrived in austin minutes before, and headed straight to the party. gotta love the brits. :)

piper, julie, and robbie

we headed up to the diesel party, where we saw film school play, and hung out with the spinto band a little bit (who we'd befriended the week before when they were in san francisco... they even came to julie's house for birthday cake and sang her happy birthday, so sweet), and saw the boyskout girls, and our friend robbie. we managed to get to the hall early enough to eat a real sit-down dinner, even (hard to come by at sxsw!) we got a couple of free drinks in before we had to run, because we wanted to make certain we'd get into the bbc showcase.

elise and jeff spinto

we then hopped in a cab to go to the bbc showcase at eternal, which had the most amazing lineup ever: the guillemonts, then a "secret" set by the spinto band (their manager jeff told us about it the week before), then boy kill boy, followed by a "secret" flaming lips set (hot damn), then dirty pretty things, and finally clap your hands say yeah. it was a really really evening. the guillemonts were pretty good, but i was ready for them to be done before they were. the spinto band were great, even tho they were all still feeling sick, and they played my favorite song of theirs, "late", which made me really happy. tom has this great "granny chic" fashion thing going on: last week he was wearing this vintage sweatshirt with two dogs on the front (and their butts on the back), and for their show at eternal, he rocked a white sweater with little flowers all over it (even though it was well over 100 degrees in the venue). i thought boy kill boy was good but not great... but the flaming lips were incredible. they opened with a cover of "bohemian rhapsody", played a bunch of new songs, and yoshimi. julie was on the stage photographing the entire night (and i just heard that she was in the MTV footage from the show, how cool!). i got to join her for the last two flaming lips songs, which was fantastic. it was fun to watch wayne playing with all his toys on the stage... by the time they left, the stage floor was almost impossible to see under all the confetti, streamers, and broken balloons. yay! yay!

elise and matt from the arctic monkeys

clap your hands say yeah at eternal
arcticmonkeys.jpg the arctic monkeys managed to get into the club somehow (i think jeff helped them get in - the line was incredibly long, and they don't make exceptions for anyone), and they were kind enough to get jeff really drunk (the spinto band had an incredibly bad day of missed flights, intensive security checks, having to buy a second set of plane tickets to fly into a nearby airport and then drive to austin, and then a stolen suitcase... ugh. all on no sleep. so jeff really needed a drink.) they're interesting boys. refused to do a station id, said they'd never done one. they're only like 19... so young. and very entertaining. matt told us that when they were in japan recently, they saw a flyer for clap your hands say yeah that had a typo: "crap your hands say yeah". julie was disappointed he hadn't taken a picture of it. dirty pretty things followed the flaming lips, and they were ok... it's got to be hard to follow the lips. i think i was mostly drinking tequila shots and beer with the arctic monkey boys during their set, tho, to be honest. (well, and i helped the spinto band haul their gear out to the van and got a quick interview with them. did i mention that julie and i double as roadies?) but as soon as clap your hands say yeah went on, i ran up front to watch them play. they completely rocked, and they even played a new song, which was cool. we finally stumbled out of the club at closing time, and as we were walking down the street to find a place to hail a cab, this woman who was even drunker than we were came up and grabbed our arms and was complaining loudly with a thick slur that she was looking for her brother, which made us laugh really hard.
