post sxsw
it's always so hard to come back from sxsw and get back to "real life." i sort of think of sxsw as the burning man of indie rock. silly, cheesy even, but true. i haven't been to burning man since i started going to sxsw, so i figure that for me it has some validity, anyway.
the biggest trouble for me about sxsw, other than coming home and getting sick (which i managed to avoid this year for the first time! ...ok, other than getting a cold from my office a little over a week later), is the crazy pile of catch-up work i have to do. really, it's the combination of noise pop and sxsw that puts me so far behind, but any which way... it's a lot of work. my stack of un-listened-to cds grew to all-time heights during my absence, not to mention my emails and site messages (i.e. myspace). makes me feel like a dick for not getting to stuff in a timely manner.
sxsw was really great this year. i got to see the Jealous Girlfriends for the first time, and OMG. they were *amazing*. seriously. you have to check them out. live, if you can. i saw them on the last day, during the afternoon, they must've been worn out and hungover and all of that, like the rest of us, and they were fantastic. i was watching them with a pile of my industry friends, and we were all just wowed. dang.
i also really really enjoyed sets by: Los Campensinos! (yay! welsh bands!), Longwave (wow! & my frinend Jim from Spoon tells me he's doing a side project with Steve from Longwave, can't wait to hear it), Delta Spirit, Headlights (liked them so much I went and saw them again the following week here in SF), Someone Loves You Boris Yeltsin (so freakin' cute), Earlimart (awesome as always), Bon Iver, The Dodos (dang, these boys have grown so much as a band, it kind of freaks me out), Yo La Tengo (saw them when they did a show for Georgia's sister's film release party, tiny tiny room, so loverly...)
I also did a panel at SXSW interactive this year: on music use on the internet, regarding copyright, licensing and royalties. i thought it went really well. my whole thing was that i wanted people to learn something: which apparently most people did, including me. that's great. i attended all of Interactive this year, and didn't learn crap from the panels... which was really disappointing. but i made a lot of good contacts and met people i needed to meet, which is always good.
good news: i looked at some stats earlier this evening, IPR cleared over 1.9 million listeners in the past 30 days. wow. wow. wow. i'm going to have to do some serious celebrating when i hit 2 million. geesh. last time i looked it was 1.4 million, and that was just a couple of weeks ago!
sorry it's been so long since i last wrote here. i forget most of the time. you can find me on facebook or myspace or flickr or linkedin or ...yeah. i'm a bit better with, er, some/most of those than i am here. :D
