z is for zillah who drank too much gin
once, when i was in college, i went to see my friend viva's new band. her bass player was an ex of mine, this guy jeff i'd dated for just a short while, like a month maybe, and we'd split up a few months prior to the show. between songs, viva looked right at me and announced, 'we'd like to congratulate our bass player jeff on his recent marriage!' to which i'm sure my jaw simply dropped on the floor. seems he'd met a girl right after we broke up and had already married her, in that few-month-long space. i don't think i could've been more surprised, even though i suppose i shouldn't have been, as i think i'd been dating him for all of a week before he asked me to move in with him.
i guess some recent conversations and whatnot are the reason i remembered this. it's funny, pretty much everyone i've ever dated got married not long after we split up, and usually to the next girl they dated. i wonder what that all means.
i finally went through the pictures laurent took of me and my mother while we were visiting him in geneva. i put some of my favorites up here.
i had a really weird dream this morning, in which i'd been running around and in and out of other people's houses while on vacation somewhere strange, i had some kind of weird permission from these people to be in and out of their houses although i wasn't staying at any of them. then i went outside and sat down on the curb, and there was some sort of outdoor bbq or something going on, some people gathered but not a lot, and i sat near this guy, who i didn't really notice, but became engaged in conversation with. i'd been telling him some story, and at the end asked him a question that went something like, 'why do people always just leave things like that?', and his reply was queer and unexpected, as i didn't know him, because he said 'i would never leave you'. i turned and looked at him most curious as to who he was and why he'd say something like that to me, and just then i woke up. what do you suppose that was all about?
i went to a bachelorette party last night with eight other women. we had sushi at country station, which is this odd little sushi joint in the mission, and the folks that run it are maybe a little crazy but definitely a lot of fun. i think they gave us all our sake for free, because our bill was ridiculously cheap. at one point one of the mission's wandering mexican musicians came in and didn't understand when the hostess/owner told him we were there for a bachelorette party, so he came and sang 'happy birthday' to us, and ended up turning the birthday song into some other rambling song that kept losing its beat despite the whole restaurant banging on tables and clinking glasses along with it. there was a good laugh when the owner tried to sing 'here comes the bride' to the musician to explain that it wasn't a birthday afterwards, and then she ran around the restaurant and gave everyone free sake, including the musician, and then there were more songs and the sushi chefs and waiters got tamborines out to play along... it was awfully silly and fun. sometimes it seems like there are all these little worlds tucked away in this city, and you can simply accidentally stumble upon them from time to time and find yourself completely taken off guard by what you discover.
we went to the mint after dinner, which is a karaoke bar. i'd never been to one before. it was fun, although i wouldn't go up and sing, but i laughed a lot and was pleasantly surprised by how good some of the participants were. i think it was a good place for a bachelorette party for sure.
lately i've been cleaning a lot of houses to pay the rent. it's much harder work than computer stuff, physically anyway. i don't mind really though, i find it quite satisfying most of the time. it's nice to arrive at a dirty, messy house and leave it all clean and tidy and smelling nice. i have an interview at home depot this week, though. i want to go mix paint for them. i think that'd fun - i guess that's my paint obsession showing through.
stella bean has already doubled in size since i got her last month. she's so cute! and very active. she never stops moving. she's also water-obsessed. she drinks out of the toilet if i don't put the seat down, silly thing.
